And abhirami, the Tamil sensation’s journey to success stands testimony to it. Passed through the ups and downs that are common in an actor’s career, she still managed to hold her own amongst it. And got in return the sweet fruit of winning. Let’s have a peek at her story.
Born on the 26th day of the month of July, this upcoming star was initially named Divya Gopi Kumar. Her father, Gopi Kumar and mother Pushpa, residents of Trivandrum city in Kerala apparently nicknamed their child after goddess of Laxmi as Abhirami.
She completed her schooling from ChristNagarEnglishHigh School. When she was in 8th standard she got her first dib at acting with a Malayalam movie ‘kathapurushan’ by Adoor Gopalakrishnan as a child artiste. Even though the movie was a hit, Abhirami decided to concentrate on her education and quit working. Whiling away in MarIvaniousCollege in Kerala, she took up the job on an anchoring job on television channel Asianet for the show ‘Pepsi Top Ten’. This stint on television helped her later bag a Malyali tele series of 100 episodes ‘Akshaya Patram’ by director Sreekumaran Thampy. But success wasn’t knocking on her doors just then as she failed to match up to her senior successful counterpart, Manju Warrior.
Not one to be marred by her failures, Abhirami turned her wheels towards Tamil film industry, her mother tongue. In fact, it was the costume designer of her one of Malayalam films, ‘Millennium stars’ who recommended her to director Manoj Kumar.
She made her debut in 2000 with Tamil blockbuster ‘vanaavil’ opposite superstar Arjun. Although she was working with good directors and delivering hits she wasn’t still in the league of the reigning queens of tollywood at that time, Jyothika, Simran and Devyani.
The shining moment of her life came when Kamal Hassan, the legend of Tamil cinema zeroed her in for his home production, ‘Virumandi’ in 2004. Her village belle act was well received by the audience and she finally found her bearings in the Tamil industry. Since then she has worked in many successful films and has become a household name.
In the free time, one can often find her crooning songs to herself and looping together words in to poetry. Currently, the heartthrob of scores of people, her own heart beats for Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan and Kamal Hassan.
Abhirami’s rise to success is not less than a fairytale and teaches people never to lose hope. Who knows, your luck is standing just round the next corner.
