Remember last week when I showed you photos of model Claudia Galanti hanging out on the beach with Venezuelan beauty queen Aida Yespica? Well, Aida’s still there and she’s still wearing a bikini. I’m still trying to figure out how Aida lost in the Miss Venezuela competition to… hang on… Mariangel Ruiz. This Mariangel, she must be one heck of a piece of ass. Anyone out there know if she is? Madhubala
The fifth child of a Pathan father's brood of 11 children, her first stint with films came as a child star in 'Barsaat ' in 1942. At 16, she had a super successful film 'Mahal ' to her credit. 'Aayega Aanewala' heralded the arrival of a superstar. Success gave way to personal heartbreaks. Her relationship with Premnath fell apart when Dilip Kumar walked into her life.
Madhubala and Dilip Kumar first met on the set of Jwar Bhatta (1944), and worked together again on the set of Tarana (1951). At their first meeting, she was eighteen years old and he was twenty-nine. The legend goes that, as in Mughal-e-Azam, she sent him a note inside a flower, and he was amused and intrigued by this and engaged in a dalliance with her. However, her feelings for him were extremely serious. During the nine-year shooting of Mughal-e-Azam (1960), she wanted to marry Kumar, but he paid her little attention and finally married someone else, while continuing an affair with her. However, Madhubala's father dominated her and she could not oppose him and her affair with Dilip was cut short. Madhubala and Kumar were forcibly separated. They were working on another film together at the time, and were unable to complete it.
Madhubala received simultaneous marriage proposals from three men and turned to Nargis, a close friend, for advice. Nargis suggested that Bharat Bhushan would respect her, as he was a widower, while Pradeep Kumar and Kishore Kumar were already married. However, she had already made up her mind on Kishore Kumar.
She accepted his proposal, as he was the first man who came into her life on the rebound during the filming of Chalti Ka Naam Gadi and Jhumroo. Her father had informed Kishore that Madhubala would be flying to London for a complicated operation, and that he could marry her on her return. Kishore, however, knew she wanted to get married before she died, and he wanted to fulfill her desire.
They had a civil ceremony in 1960. His parents refused to attend the wedding and never really accepted Madhubala, as they thought she had broken their son's marriage.
All of a sudden, her life began to disintegrate. All her films, even the major ones like Mehboob Khan's 'Amar', started flopping and she became box-office poison. She was thrown out of B.R.Chopra's 'Naya Daur' after a scandalous court case. Not only that, she was diagnosed as having a hole in her heart.
But the fighter that she was, she turned her career around with a row of hits like - 'Phagun', 'Howrah Bridge', 'Chalti Ka Naam Gadi', 'Kaala Paani', 'Barsaat Ki Raat'. Around this time she plunged into a loveless marriage with singing star Kishore Kumar. Her film 'Mughal-E- Azam' showed off the finely modulated depths of Madhubala's creative ability, but her pain-wracked body forced her to cut short her career.
Madhubala's heart problem was discovered in a routine check-up in 1950 when heart surgery was not available. She had to put on a brave face, and her illness was kept a secret from the industry for many years. She frequently coughed up blood on the sets. She moved back to her bungalow a couple of weeks or so later because her in-laws attitude was upsetting her. She realised she had made a mistake in marrying Kishore. The doctors in London refused to operate on Madhubala, as they thought she would die during the operation. Even she did survive, it would only be for a year.She suffered for nine years, before she surrendered herself to death in 1969. She was buried with her diary at Santacruz Burial Ground by her family and Kishore Kumar.
She tried making a comeback opposite Raj Kapoor in Chalack (1964), but she collapsed on the first day of shooting and the film was shelved. In this short life, she made over 70 films, and to this day remains one of the most enduring legends of Indian cinema.

Waheeda Rehman Biography
Waheeda Rehman born on 14 May 1936 famous Indian film actress. Waheeda Rehman was discovered by Guru Dutt and casted in his production C.I.D. 1956. Her dream was to become a doctor but due to circumstances she abandoned this goal.
Waheeda Rehman was born into a traditional Muslim family in Chengalpattu, Tamil Nadu, India. She and her sister learnt Bharatnatyam and performed on stage along with her sister. Her father was a District Commissioner.
Guru Dutt gave her a leading role in Pyaasa 1957. It was at this point that she got involved in an unsuccessful love affair with Guru Dutt. Their next Film together was Kaagaz Ke Phool 1959, depicted the story of a successful director's decline. Guru Dutt's existing marriage and her film successes with other directors caused them to drift apart personally and professionally, although they continued to work together into the 1960s Chaudhvin Ka Chand. She completed Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam 1962. Soon afterwards, Guru Dutt died on 10 October 1964 in Mumbai reportedly from an overdose of sleeping pills and alcohol.
Waheeda Rahman also acted in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film Abhijan in 1962.
Her career continued throughout the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. She won the Filmfare Best Actress Award for her roles in Guide opposite Dev Anand (1965), where she hit the peak of her career and Neel Kamal opposite Raj Kumar (1968), She got National award for her performance in Reshma Aur Shera opposite Sunil Dutt (1971), some of the films failed at the box office. At around this time, Kamaljit who starred opposite her in Shagun (1964)) proposed to her. She accepted and they were married on 27 April 1974. After her marriage, she shifted to a farmhouse in Bangalore. She bore two children named Sohail and Kashvi. After her appearance in Lamhe (1991) she retired from the film industry for 12 years. On 21 November 2000, her husband died following a prolonged illness. She moved back to her ocean view bungalow in Bandra, Bombay where she lives currently.
In recent years she made a comeback playing elderly mother and grandmother roles in Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Water (2005) and Rang De Basanti (2006) and Delhi 6 (2009) which were all critically acclaimed.

In October 2004, Waheeda Rehman film retrospective was held at the Seattle Art Museum and the University of Washington where Waheeda participated in spirited panel and audience discussions on her most memorable films, Pyaasa, Teesri Kasam and Guide.
Her most successful film is still considered to be Khamoshi, with Rajesh Khanna.

Biswajeet was born in Calcutta, West Bengal, but later went over to Bombay to do some memorable Hindi films.
Biswajeet started his career in 1960 with the Bengali film, 'Natun Fasal'. Earlier, in spite of family oppositions, young Biswajeet played a tiny role in a Bengali film “Dak Harakara”.
After a couple of hit films in Calcutta like 'Mayamrigo' and 'Dui Bhai' , Biswajeet went to Bombay. In 1962, he catapulted to fame with his superhit film, Bees Saal Baad.
Biswajeet wide-eyed innocence worked in his favour. A good film with a powerful script, suspense and good, haunting 'Kahin Deep Jale Kahin Dil' music 'Bees Saal Baad' was a hit. He already had a career in Bengali films where his first film was 'Kangsa'. However, he made a niche for himself in the light romantic films popular in those days. These films include 'Bin Badal Barsaat', 'Kaise Kahoon', 'Mere Sanam', 'Shehnai', 'Do Dil' , 'Yeh Raat Phir Naa Ayegi' , 'April Fool' , 'Do Kaliyan' , 'Sharaarat' and 'Night in London'. Shammi Kapoor was the king of this genre of films but there were more films than he could do alone. The rest went to Biswajeet. They even shared the heroines: Saira Bano, Rajshri, Mumtaz, Mala Sinha, Sharmila Tagore and Asha Parekh. His films often had popular soundtracks, causing the films, and Biswajeet, to become even better-known.
Biswajeet found himself on the cover of 'Life' thanks to Rekha, his co-star in 'Do Shikari' and 'Anjana Safar'. Biswajeet had to kiss Rekha in a scene and the director, Raja Nawathe forgot to say 'cut' and they went on and on till the unit started clapping. It was this kiss that was featured on the cover. An average actor, Biswajeet ultimately found himself being relegated to play sidey actors. Biswajeet tried his hand at direction with 'Kahtey Hain Mujhko Raja' but it did not impress the viewers. The film did moderately well at the box office. Later he went back to acting.

Biswajeet has been married twice and has three children. He has a son and a daughter from his late first wife. His son Prasenjit is a superstar in Bengal and has been the number one star of Bengali cinema for more than a decade now. His elder daughter, Pallabi Chatterjee, is a lesser known film and television actress.
Biswajeet currently lives in Bombay with his second wife and their daughter Shambhavi.

She began her Hindi film career with Shammi Kapoor in 'Kashmir Ki Kali' and 'An Evening In Paris'. Although she was too young for a film career (she was barely thirteen), her freshness and ebullience made her a selling proposition. "Acting happened too early in life," she recalls. "In fact, 'Apur Sansar', my first film and then 'Devi', were supposed to be my only films. I worked in them during my school holidays."
Being Satyajit Ray's discovery in 'Apur Sansar' gave Sharmila a distinction from the onset. In their second film together, 'Devi', her portrayal of a teenage wife whose father-in-law believes her to be the reincarnation of Kali, moved America's most respected film critic, Pauline Kael to remark, "… she is exquisite, perfect ".
"But because of my early success with these films and because I was inundated with offers from with Shakti Samanta and Sachin Bhowmick who were known to my parents, I succumbed. So my career in films was a kind of chance with pressure, mingled with curiosity. But it was never meant to be a long-term goal. And when 'Kashmir Ki Kali' happened, it was suppose to be my only film in Bombay and I was going to get back to Calcutta. But films kind of kept happening and the acting bug slowly got hold of me." Although her initial films didn't give her much scope to prove her potential as an actress, she made an indelible mark in the minds of the audience with her performances. And with films like 'Aradhana', which charted the growth of her character from a young girl to an old woman, her career changed soon afterwards. Likewise, in a series of Rajesh Khanna hits like 'Daag', 'Amar Prem' and 'Safar', she was established as a star.
However, she continued to work with Ray, in films like 'Nayak', (where she surprised everybody by wearing spectacles throughout the film), 'Aranyer Din Ratri' and 'Seemabaddha'. "Looking back, I realise I was very different from the other actresses of my time. My behaviour was grossly misinterpreted. I felt I was making mistakes all the time. I'd wear clothes that were not suitable. Everybody would be wearing a sari and I'd turn up in jeans. I was also accused of being snooty and arrogant, which I was not. I didn't know that one was expected to lead a certain lifestyle."
However, her marriage to the former Indian cricket captain, Mansoor Ali Khan, the Nawab of Pataudi, has been one of the most successful ones in the industry, so much so that her best performances have been with the support of her husband. "Tiger was totally supportive. People were hundred percent convinced that our marriage would not last. But we have proved all of them wrong."

Mehmood was one of nine children born to actor and dancer Mumtaz Ali in Bombay. Mehmood started acting as a reluctant child actor in Bombay Talkies films like Kismet. Some of his early jobs before he started acting were driving, doing odd jobs, selling poultry. Mehmood worked as director P L Santoshi's driver. Later Santoshi's son Rajkumar Santoshi cast Mehmood in his venture Andaz Apna Apna. He was hired to teach table tennis to Meena Kumari in those days. Mehmood later married her sister Madhu. It was after marriage and becoming a father that he decided to act to earn a better living. Mehmood got a small break as a murder victim in CID. He started off by doing small unnoticed roles in films like "Do Bigha Zameen" and "Pyaasa". He later went on to act in lead roles but he was appreciated for his comedy.
Death came to him silently in his sleep! Alas, there was no sound of laughter! He must have missed that! Mehmood the Bollywood comic legend died in his sleep, in a hotel room at Pennsylvania (where he had gone for medical treatment) in July 2004.
The inimitable Mehmood was Bollywood’s best-known comedian. There were many other comedians in Bombay Talkies before he came to the screen, but they merely functioned as excuses to take the audience’s mind off the melodramatic plot for a few minutes of the film’s running time. Then, along came Mehmood – and he made the comedian’s role an integral part of the story line. Often the comedian’s plight proved more interesting than even the hero’s romance. And, for a brief period in the 60s, thanks to him, comedy was king. And Mehmood was the uncrowned King of Comedy.
By the time the 90s set in, Mehmood had played his entire hand as actor, director, storywriter and producer. But, he was now keeping indifferent health. He made one last attempt at a comeback, with a film called Dushman Duniya Ka. By now, there was a new generation of filmgoers in the theatres and new stars in Bollywood’s firmaments. Mehmood managed to get the brightest new star into his movie. Shah Rukh Khan – a self-confessed Mehmood admirer – played the role of the “young” Mehmood in the film, complete with toothbrush moustache and manic eye-rolls. But, by then, Mehmood had lost his most precious gift – the ability to feel the pulse of the junta’s moods and laughter. The film was a dismal flop at the box-office!
Mehmood will forever be remembered as he appeared in his heydays as the King of Comedy. He taught a nation how to laugh! Thank you for the laughter!
Mehmood also gave major breaks to Amitabh Bachchan, who actually stayed with Mehmood and his brother Mansoor Ali in his early days in Mumbai, and Aruna Irani in "Bombay To Goa".
Some of his memorable songs are: "Ek chatur naar" from Padosan, "Aao Twist Karen" (Let's do the twist) from Bhoot Bangla, "Yeh do deewane dil ke" from Johar Mehmood in Goa, "Hum kaale hai to kyaa huaa dilwaale hain" (What if I am dark, I have a heart) from Gumnaam.

Sanjay (Abbas) Khan was born in Bangalore and is of mixed Pathan and Iranian parentage He is married to Parsi Zarine Khan. Sanjay Khan has two brothers, Feroz Khan and Akbar Khan also work as actors, as does his son, Zayed Khan. He had three daughters and a son. Elder daughter Farha (married to DJ Aqeel), second daughter Simone (married to Ajay Arora) and his youngest daughter Suzanne Khan is married to actor Hrithik Roshan. Sanjay Khan became grandfather on March 28, 2006 of a boy named Hrehaan, Hrithik Roshan's and Suzanne Khan's first child. Sanjay Khan's Daughter-in-Law is Malika Parekh who is married to his son Zayed Khan.

Sunil Dutt was born in the village of Khurd (now in Pakistan ). His family moved to India during the Partition of India (1947). In Mumbai, he joined Jai Hind College as an undergraduate and took up a job. A stroke of luck fetched him an additional assignment with an advertisement company and he could supplement his income by a few hundred more rupees.
Starting out in radio, Sunil Dutt was a hugely popular announcer on the Hindi Service of Radio Ceylon, the oldest radio station in South Asia. He moved to acting in Hindi films. Sunil Dutt acted in several successful films from 1956. Sunil Dutt bagged his first film, 'Railway Platform' in 1955, co-starring Nalini Jaywant. Sunil Dutt became a star with Mehboob Khan's 'Mother India' and simultaneously fell in love with Nargis when he saved her from death by fire.
Sunil Dutt married Nargis on March 11, 1958. He had 1 son and 2 daughters. Sunil Dutt introduced his son Sanjay in Rocky in 1981. In that same year, his wife died of pancreatic cancer. He set up Nargis Dutt foundation in memory of his wife for the cure of cancer patients. Sunil Dutt was also a sponsor of the India Project, a Nobel Peace Prize-nominated organization akin to Operation Smile for the treatment of Indian children with facial deformities.
Sunil Dutt then did several films where the heroine had the better roles, like 'Sujata', 'Bandini', 'Sadhana', 'Amrapali' and 'Mera Saaya'. His first film as a producer, 'Yeh Raaste Hain Pyar Ke' in 1963 dared to show the heroine actually commiting adultery. In his next production, 'Mujhe Jeene Do' in 1963, he played a dacoit who kidnaps the heroine and also kills for profit. He risked playing a cripple in 'Khandaan' and the buffoon in 'Padosan'. After his film 'Reshma Aur Shera' bombed at the box-office, Sunil began playing safe with films like 'Heera' and 'Zakhmee'.
In 1984 he joined the Congress (I) party and was elected to Parliament for five terms from the constituency of Mumbai North West. His political career was halted for some years in the early 1990s when he worked to free his son from jail after he was arrested following Hindu-Muslim clashes in Mumbai.
Sunil Dutt died of a heart attack at his residence in Bandra, Mumbai in his sleep. His seat in Parliament will be contested by his daughter, Priya Dutt.

Till 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha' (1957), Prithviraj Kapoor & his second son Shammi Kapoor (originally Shamsher) was a failure. He had tried acting in mythological and social films but his lean frame and expressionless face had failed to make any impression. 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha' revealed a new persona which grabbed attention of the young, who easily identified with him. 'Dil Deke Dekho' and 'Junglee' added to this image, the image of a young, debonair rebel.
His parents request him marry the girl of his choice, and the image was in typically Hindi film mould, but an entire generation sang and danced along with him in 'Professor', 'Janwar', 'Kashmir Ki Kali', 'Teesri Manzil' and 'Brahamchari'. He married one of his leading ladies Geeta Bali. Her premature death shattered him considerably. Shammi was not the same. He went haywire, but continued doing some films. 'Andaz' saw his decline as Rajesh Khanna, in this very film, easily came across as a fresher, brighter star who contrasted Shammi's jaded look.
He grew a beard, got married once again, wore malas. This obese and older Shammi played some character roles in films like 'Vidhaata', 'Zameer' and 'Prem Rog'. He also made at least two forgettable films 'Manoranjan' and 'Bandalbaaz' and an equally mediocre video magazine 'Manoranjan' before settling for a mouse in his hand. Shammi Kapoor is an internet buff now, but occasionally acts in TV serials.

He was on dialysis since 2006, he was always thankful to God for giving him so much.
He died of renal failure around 5.00 am on 14 August 2011 at Breach Candy hospital Mumbai.

Rajendra Kumar was born on 20 July 1929. Rajendra Kumar was born in Sialkot, in the West Punjab province of British India, currently in Pakistan. Who acted in Bollywood films mostly from the 1950s through the 1960s and 1970s. He has also produced and directed movies.
Rajendra Kumar married Shukla and had a son Kumar Gaurav also an actor and two daughters. His son married Namrata Dutt, the daugher of actors Sunil Dutt and Nargis and sister of actor Sanjay Dutt.
Rajendra Kumar began his career by working as an extra in films like 'Mela' in 1948. After a long struggle for seven years, his first major role came with 'Vachan' in 1955, where he played Geeta Bali's brother. Rajendra Kumar made his debut in Jogan in 1950 in which he starred opposite Dilip Kumar and Nargis. He was then noticed in the blockbuster hit Mother India in 1957 in which he played Nargis's son.
The 1960s saw Rajendra Kumar rise like no other star had risen, and there was a time when every film starring him was a silver jubilee hit. There were times when he had six or seven films running in their silver jubilee weeks at the same time. It was a success that was unbelievable and Rajendra Kumar was soon known as "Jubilee Kumar".
He had many successful box office hits including Dhool Ka Phool , Mere Mehboob , Sangam , Arzoo , Suraj and Ganwar . He was considered a golden boy for the movie producers in the sense that he was the actor who could recover the producers' money in a matter of few weeks.
Several of his films bombed at the box office, and he was not getting the offers he used to receive earlier.The sunshine came when he was offered an interesting role in the film Saajan Bina Suhaagan opposite Nutan. The film was a huge blockbuster of 1978. He then switched from leading roles and played many character roles in the late 1970s and 1980s.
In 1981 Rajendra introduced his son Kumar Gaurav in the film Love Story which he produced, directed and also appeared in. The film was declared the blockbuster of 1981. But the success was shortlived as Kumar Gaurav's later films were huge disappointments at the box office and his son's career declined as soon as it began. Rajendra also produced and acted with his son in Phool but this was also a box office failure. Kumar appeared in fewer films after this and his last film appearance was a minor role in Deepa Mehta's critically acclaimed film Earth in 1998.
Rajendra Kumar himself moved over to play character roles and even acted in TV serials. But this was not for want of money. The prudent Punjabi had all along invested his earnings wisely in blue chip shares, a dubbing theatre (named after his daughter Dimple) and had several other interests.
Rajendra Kumar died on July 29, 1999 of cancer only nine days after his 70th birthday and the birthday of his son's brother-in-law Sanjay Dutt. He was known to never have taken medicines in his entire life.

AWARDS AND HONORS :
Rajendra Kumar was honoured with the Padma Shri Award in 1969.
He was also conferred with Justice of Peace honour and served as Honorary Magistrate.
He was awarded the National Honour by late Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru simultaneously for “Kanoon” (Hindi) and “Mehandi Rang Lagyo” (Gujarati).
He received a special Shastri National Award and was associated with several charity schemes.
Manoj Kumar (JamActor of India)
Manoj's image as the patriotic hero started with the 1965 film Shaheed, which was based on the life of Bhagat Singh. With memories of the India-Pakistan War still fresh, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan "Jai Jawan Jai Kissan" .
The result was Manoj Kumar's magnum opus and his directorial debut, Upkar (1967). In it, he managed to convincingly play both a jawan and a kissan. The film was also noted for the famous song Mere Desh Ki Dharti, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Upkar won Manoj Kumar his first Filmfare Best Director Award. The film was a huge hit and made Manoj the authority on Bollywood patriotism.
After dabbling in various roles in the late 1960s, Manoj returned to patriotic themes in Purab Aur Paschim, in which life in the East and West are juxtaposed. In 1972, he starred in Be-Imaan (for which he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award) and directed and starred in Shor. The latter, opposite Jaya Bhaduri, was not a huge box office success, but it did feature the memorable song Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai, a duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh which was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.
Manoj Kumar had phoned me to say 'Holi ki badhai' last month and at that time, was very keen for me to see his latest film 'Jai Hind'. I promised to see it. perhaps because he could sense that I was half- hearted, or more likely, he was unsure of his film, Pandit didn't force me to view it. I have not seen this film - I don't have the heart to see the death of one who was once a great film maker. This death is not sudden. Manoj has been dying for several years. It has been a slow and painful death.
In fact, I would have admired him if he had decided to retire after 'Kranti'. But it doesn't happen that way. Politicians and film stars never retire. 'Kranti' was his crowning glory. He fulfilled his desire to direct Dilip Kumar, who he had admired, imitated and even disliked. He proved to the world that he was the only director who didn't let Dilip Kumar interfere in his film. 'Kranti' was totally a Manoj Kumar film, it didn't have the slightest stamp of Dilip Kumar, usually present in the latter's films. Manoj's diktat to all his stars was 'Aap aao apni marzi se, lekin jao meri marzi se'. He was the King and in those days, he was offered a crore of rupees for acting and directing an outside film. He rejected these offers. He worked at pace leisurely. Not for him the hurried shots and rush jobs.
Like Dilip Kumar, Manoj Kumar has always interfered in some of the films he acted in and it showed. I am not sure about his famous suspense film with Sadhana, 'Woh Kaun Thi'. Manoj Kumar has privately claimed credit for the direction of this and some other films - but the Manoj Kumar stamp is visible even in 'Beimaan', 'Dus Numbri' and 'Yaadgar'. Songs like 'Iktaara bole...do tarah ke leader hote hain...' are relevant to the Sonias, Laloos and Rabris of today too. Songs and lyrics made social comments and yet, the films were commercially successful. Successful socially relevant film were an impossibility till Manoj Kumar came along. Somehow the 'greatness of India and Indian culture' had never excited the viewers earlier.
Manoj Kumar officially began film directing with 'Upkaar'. Mediocre photographers use cliched images to depict contrast; like juxtaposing Bombay's slums with its skyscrapers etc. 'Purab aur Pachhim' did the same, but with a finesse which is still remembered, and copied. Subhash Ghai did it in 'Pardes', and Rishi Kapoor imitated in 'Aa Ab Laut Chalen'. Rishi, in fact, borrowed a video cassette of this film from Manoj Kumar, and the inspiration is there for all to see in Akshaye Khanna and Suman Rangnathan.
I can never forget the applause Bharat received when he answered the disllusioned NRI Pran's taunt: 'India's contribution is zero...zero...zero'. 'Jab zero diya mere Bharat ne, duniya ko tab ginti aayee...' was a fitting reply which showed his pride in what India was. It was with the same genuine pride that he had installed Nehru, Shastri and Indira on a pedestal along with Bhagat Singh and Lal Bahadur Shastri in his films. I am sure it was not sycophancy, as his sincerity showed, and except for a 'tax exemption' Manoj Kumar did not get any benefit from the Congress. Not any that I know of. He even refused to contest in the elections when he was offered a ticket!
Manoj Kumar repeated his success in 'Roti Kapda aur Makaan'. 'Shor' was another good film. He picked up a two para news-story and made a film out of it. The story was about one of those ironies of life: a father cycled non-stop for 14 days, to break a record and win a cash prize to pay for a surgery for his mute son. When the son regains his voice, the father meets with an accident and loses his hearing! Few among the Indian film makers could make a film with this theme, but Manoj did. By now, he had become close to Indira Gandhi who he used to refer to as 'Madam'. It is during this period that politics started corrupting him. In the mid-seventies, when the country was seething at the tyranny let loose by Mrs Gandhi and Sanjay Gandhi, like it happens to all who are too close to power, Manoj lost touch with his audience.
Manoj Kumar announced his next film, 'Naya Bharat'. To Manoj it may have been intended as another 'Upkaar', but I see it as no less than a propoganda film. To me the context was the compulsory projection of the 20-point programme on the State-controlled DD and All India Radio. This was the height of sycophancy. Salim-Javed were to write the script. Fortunately for him, the film was not made. The Emergency was lifted and the great Indian public rejected Indira and Sanjay, the way I believe they will reject Sonia Gandhi. If this compromise of Manoj reduced his stature in my view, I suspect he fell in his own esteem, in 1984. The massacre of the Sikhs in New Delhi after the assassination of Indira Gandhi would have made any self-respecting Indian, (specially if he happened to be a Punjabi , for whom Bhagat Singh was a hero,) boil. I am sure Manoj Kumar must have realized the futility of all his 'Upkaars' and Bharats.
I am sure he must have felt like a sucker. What had Manoj Kumar to show for all these years...films with messages he didn't believe in. Okay, they brought in a lot of moolah but that wasn't what made him feel great. It was Bharat that made him proud. It was the shots he had devised, which, when the Dheeraj Kumars of this world copied, elated him. It was a Manoj Kumar sans convictions who laid an egg called 'Clerk'. He went into his shell. Quietly, without any fanfare, he switched to Hindutva. But now, the convictions were missing. It was a further disillusioned Manoj Kumar that has made 'Jai Hind'. Manoj Kumar has no beliefs left.

Born in Calcutta on January 15, 1938. Shashi Kapoor, the third son of Prithviraj Kapoor, made his first screen appearance aged 14 in his elder brother Raj Kapoor's 'Awara'. He played the child Raj Kapoor. As a child star, he even acted in forgettable mythologicals like 'Bhakta Dhurva' and 'Murliwala' .
In July, 1958, Shashi Kapoor married the British actress Jennifer Kendal and they acted in a number of films together, most notably in the Merchant Ivory productions. He had three children with Kendal, Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor and Sanjana Kapoor. Shashi Kapoor won the National Award for acting for his role in New Delhi Times. He did not value the award much as he was still upset about his wife not getting the award for 36 Chowringhee Lane some years ago. She had lost out to Rekha in Umrao Jaan. Jennifer Kendal died of cancer in 1984.
Shashi Kapoor also made a two-reeler called 'Phansi' using a 16 mm movie camera Raj had given him. But if Raj Kapoor expected him to become a film maker, he was disappointed. Shashi became an actor. Beginning with 'Char Diwari', he acted in many films. Most of the films were forgettable and his performances mediocre.
Possibly because he had married an English theatre actress Jennifer Kendal, he had an attitude problem, and often lambasted Hindi films. That he failed to click only added to his cynicism. At 27, he made his first hit, in 'Jab Jab Phool Khile'. Some of his films in this period include 'Haseena Maan Jayegi', 'Mehndi Lagi Mere Haath', 'Waqt', 'Aa Gale Lag Ja', 'Pyar Ka Mausam' and 'Chor Machaye Shor'. The Anglicised actor found an outlet in such Indo-English films as Merchant-Ivory's 'Householder' and 'Heat & Dust'. He built a memorial to his father the Prithvi Theatre and encouraged talented film makers like Shyam Benegal, Govind Nihalani and Girish Karnad to make quality films, which he produced 'Junoon', 'Kalyug', '36 Chowringhee Lane', 'Vijeta' and 'Utsav' , all critically acclaimed though not so successful at the box office.
To finance his theatre and quality films, Shashi Kapoor signed every masala film which came his way. There was a time when he would shoot for six films on the same day, giving two hours to each. Seeing this, his elder brother Raj Kapoor, who had signed him for 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram', angrily called him a 'taxi'. His more successful phase as an actor, was as a co-star with Amitabh Bachchan 'Deewar', 'Do Aur Do Paanch', 'Silsila', 'Trishul', 'Kabhi Kabhi', though he could hardly outshine the megastar. Nevertheless, he won the National Award for his performance in 'New Delhi Times'.
Shashi Kapoor was the only actor in his family who kept his weight in check, thanks to his wife Jennifer. But after her demise, Shashi lost interest and let go. The new, bloated Shashi Kapoor even tried his hand at directing. 'Ajooba', an Indo-Soviet production. But it was a total wash-out. It was neither praised by the critics nor liked by the paying public liked it. Recently, he acted as a frustrated poet in 'In Custody' - a character so like what he has become.

Shabana Azmi is one of the leading actresses of parallel cinema. She is a film actress as well as a social activist, and while her performances in films of a variety of genre have generally earned her praises and awards.
Shabana Azmi's parents are Kaifi Azmi, a renowned Indian poet and writer of Urdu and Shaukat, a well known stage actress. She is a Muslim, and her brother, Baba Azmi, is a cinematographer. Her parents had an active social life, and their home was always throbbing with people and activities. Early in childhood, the environment in her home inculcated into her a respect for family ties, social and human values; and her parents always supported her to develop a passion for intellectual stimulation and growth.
Shabana Azmi completed a graduation degree in Psychology from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, followed by a course in Acting at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. She topped the list of successful candidates of 1972.
In the initial stage of her career, Shabana Azmi was linked to noted film director Shekhar Kapur, but married Javed Akhtar, a famed lyricist, poet and scriptwriter of bollywood on 9 December 1984. It was Akhtar’s second marriage, the first being with the Bollywood scriptwriter, Honey Irani. He has always given her encouragements to stimulate her to grow independently.

This began as a feeling of inadequacy in her, and "suddenly she felt almost perverse to win applause and accolade for representing a person on screen and ignoring her in real life".
The 1993 Mumbai riots appalled her and she emerged as a forceful critic of religious extremism. After the September 11 2001 attacks, she opposed the advice of an important religious leader calling upon the Muslims of India to join the people of Afghanistan in their fight by retorting that the leader go there alone. Her strong reaction encouraged other moderate Muslim leaders to counsel restraint and tolerance, and to shun terrorism.

Jaya Bhaduri was born on April 10, 1948 in Jabalpur. Jaya was born in a Bengali family to Indira and Taroon Kumar Bhaduri, writer, journalist and stage artist. She studied in St. Joseph's Convent School, Bhopal. Jaya's height is 5'2" or 1.57 m. She started her career with a small role in Satyajit Ray's Bengali film, Mahanagar at the age of 15 in 1963. After initial success in her native West Bengal, she became a success after Guddi in which she played a schoolgirl obsessed with film star Dharmendra after which she moved to Mumbai and starred in many Hindi hit films, such as Jawani Diwani, Uphaar, Anamika, and she helped her husband become a star by acting with him in Zanjeer (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Chupke Chupke (1975) and Sholay (1975).
On June 3, 1973, she married actor Amitabh Bachchan. The couple have two children: Shweta Bachchan-Nanda and Abhishek Bachchan, who is also an actor. She has lived her entire married life in the public eye, yet she has always kept her distance from the media.

Her forthcoming film is Chudiyan where she will appear opposite her son Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerjee and Konkona Sen Sharma.
Of late, Bachchan became active in politics, notably with the Samajwadi Party and has been a Member of Parliament, representing Rajya Sabha till lately. In a recent controversy, she was disqualified from the post of MP with the charge of occupying an office of profit along with holding a position as MP as against the sub-clause (a) of Clause 1 of Article 102 of the Constitution, where an MP is not allowed to hold any office of profit.
Jaya Bachchan has returned to the Upper House as MP of Samajwadi Party in July 2006. Her re-entry into parliament was a great photo op for the journalists when her husband Amitabh Bachchan accompanied her to the swearing in ceremony.
Her son Abhishek Bachchan recently got engaged to Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai on 14-Jan-2007. Her mother Indira Bhaduri resides alone in Bhopal in Central India. Jaya has two grandchildren from her daughter Shweta; Navya Naveli and Agastya Nanda.

Navin Nischol came into films around the time when there was an enthusiasm for students of FTII, as actors like Shatrughan Sinha, Jaya Bhaduri, Shabana Azmi and many others had stolen the thunder of the more conventional, chocolate-faced actors. Even before he got admission into FTII, the handsome Navin Nischol who had already modelled for 'Will's', had a firm commitment from Mohan Saigal, who was a family friend.
This film turned out to be 'Saawan Bhadon' , also Rekha's debut in Hindi films. It was a hit and at least three careers were made with it: Rekha, Navin and Jayshree T. Like happens with hit pairs, producers signed the two together in films like `Barkha Bahar' but that bombed. Navin's successful phase went on with films like 'Woh Main Nahin', 'Victoria Number 203', 'Dharma', 'Haste Zakham', 'Dhundh' and the very memorable 'Buddha Mil Gaya'. In fact, he was the man who got heroine Yogita Bali into 'Parwana' , in which Amitabh Bachchan played the bad guy.
But his downfall started and Navin went into oblivion till a little later, when with he started doing character roles and TV discovered him. 'Dekh Bhai Dekh' is one of the most popular serials he has done. Life came a full circle when he played a supporting role to Amitabh in 'Major Saab' and a supporting role to Rekha, the heroine of his first film, in 'Aastha'.
On April 24th 2006, his wife committed suicide by hanging at her residence.
