Her real name is Revathy but she changed her name as ‘Sandhya’. Because there was an famous actress named as "Revathy" in south Indian Films . She brought up in Chennai, Tamilnadu. Because of Her father was transferred to Chennai when she was two years old. Her father is an bank employee. Her mother is a beautician. She has one brother who studying in SRM College, Chennai. Sandhya was an ordinary school going shy girl until she starred in the critically acclaimed Tamil love story Kaadhal. She was studying in vidyodaya school and her father used to drop her and pick her up at school daily. director Balaji Sakthivel spoteed her and offered a film to her. Her debut film was "Kadhal" (tamil), opposite Bharath,. It was created sensation at box office. By this performance in this she was often referred to as Kutty Kajol, a famous Bollywood actress. . However, due to her rising fame, especially after the super-hit Dishyum, her second Tamil film, she had to discontinue her studies before even passing her 10th standard.
